AVP in Seaside Heights for five more years….

July 20, 2007

picture-224.jpg

It looks like the AVP or the Association of Volleyball Professionals will be in Seaside Heights through the year 2012. The popular sporting event, which is aired nationally on the FOX Sports Network, used to be in Seaside Heights years back, but then later moved to Belmar. Since 2006, the AVP has returned to Seaside Heights. In ‘06, the event was on the south end of the beach, between Grant Avenue and Hamilton Avenue. Because of logistical reasons, the event was moved to the north end of the beach by Hiering Avenue. Although there were some objectors to the move north, a vast majority of the comments were positive about the move, with the feeling that the Hiering Avenue property lends itself more to the quick set-up and breakdown of the event with minimal interference. Dave Popkin from Positive Impact Partners, the local marketing branch of AVP said that he was happy for another great year and a great turn out for the finals. Mr. Popkin also said he liked the new locale, and would see if it would be at Hiering Aveue in 2008. Seaside Heights Police Chief Tommy Boyd said of the AVP, “We love having them here. Seaside Heights is on the way up.” Some footage of the AVP finals is included in Pete’s July 14th talky blog.

New Marquee for the entrance of Seaside Heights.

July 20, 2007

If you’ve driven into Seaside Heights via the entrance on Sumner Avenue within the last few weeks, you might have noticed the new digital sign that has replaced the old sign with the changeable letters. The new sign went online shortly before the 4th of July holiday. The sign is changed via a modem and telephone line, and changes are literally phoned-in, just like dial-up internet. The sign was installed by Girtain sign, and was made possible in part by a grant from Commerce Bank.

The Greatest Show on Earth???

picture-253.jpg

Harry Smith is seen under the enormous blow-up screen that is used for Free Movies on The Beach.

After much planning, the new system that plays the Free Movies on the Beach in Seaside Heights is now in place. Plans for the new set-up began early in 2007, when the screen was ordered from New Jersey Partyworks in South Amboy. The screen was gotten at a very good price, as both the Borough of Seaside Heights and NJ Partyworks are members of the New Jersey Amusement Association, and a special discount was applied. Next, a special projector had to be ordered that would fit the screen, which is 20 x 30 feet. Lastly, a special sound system called a Fender Passport was purchased. This portable p.a. has a 1,500 person capacity. Once all the components were placed together and the first movie began on the evening of July 12th, moviegoers voiced their approval, saying that the look is very professional. 15 total movies are planned on the beach at Hiering Avenue.

Proenza out as Director of National Hurricane Center???

July 7, 2007

hurricanedirector5107.jpg
Embattled National Hurricane Center Director Bill Proenza caught by our cameras during happier times.

Loyal readers know that in very early May 2007, Seaside Heights Public Relations Director Pete Smith interviewed Bill Proenza, who has been the Director the National Hurricane Center since January 2007. In May, Proenza was in New Jersey on an East Coast public relations tour, displaying a Hurricane Hunter aircraft. At the time, everything seemed fine. Now however, it is highly likely that Proenza’s days are numbered as the NHC Director. The relationship between Proenza and his staff is being described as a “mutiny” and an “insurrection” by the Miami Herald, at the pulse of the story. According to stories that have made national headlines, nearly the entire staff of senior forecasters at the National Hurricane Center have signed a document calling for the removal of Proenza. On the list calling for Proenza’s ouster is Senior Forecaster Dr. Richard Knabb, who our cameras also captured at the Cape May County airport on May 1st. (The Proenza/Knabb relationship is so strained it is said, that they no longer communicate face to face, but rather by email, according to published reports.) Also signing the petition for Proenza’s ouster were senior forecasters Lixion Avila, James Franklin, and Richard Pasch. (The fifth senior forecaster, Jack Beven, was on vacation when the petition was signed). Many other lesser NHC employees signed the document as well, including Proenza’s own secretary. According to insiders, Proenza is described as demanding, difficult to work with, and verbally abusive to staff. On July 2nd, a NOAA inspection team came to the NHC to perform a snap inspection. Many believe this is being done to get ammunition to remove Proenza from the job, and all indications are that this will soon happen. Several other incidents have been cited for the inspection. Since his time at the NHC, Proenza has been critical of NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the parent of the NHC. Proenza was critical of the budget given to the NHC, and criticized NOAA for wasting money. More recently, Proenza has criticized NOAA for not replacing the QuikScat satellite, which is out-of-date. Deployed in 1999, the QuikScat measures winds in storms that are too far away to be inspected directly by a NOAA Hurricane Hunter. In his remarks, Proenza said that NHC forecasts would become less accurate should QuikScat suddenly quit. This insinuation has not been taken lightly by the NHC forecasters, who say its not true. Although some said that Proenza meant no harm, they also said his comments damaged the reputation of the forecasters, who are given much public trust. As a coastal community, Seaside Heights has to be very concerned about the situation at the National Hurricane Center as the 2007 hurricane season approaches it peak in August and September. NOAA and other prominent forecasters have said conditions are ripe this year for an active season with patterns similar to those that brought us the well-remembered hurricanes of the 1930’s, 40’s & 50’s.

HERE IS THE ACTUAL STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE STAFF OF THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER….

An unfortunate public debate is now occurring over the ability of the National Hurricane
Center to meet its mission. The undersigned staff of the National Hurricane Center has
concluded that the center needs a new Director, and with the heart of the hurricane season
fast approaching, urges the Department of Commerce to make this happen as quickly as
possible. The effective functioning of the National Hurricane Center is at stake. The staff
of the National Hurricane Center would like nothing more than to return its focus to its
primary mission of protecting life and property from hazardous tropical weather, and
leave the political arena it now finds itself in.

The magic of Johnson’s Baby Powder…

July 6, 2007

picture-056.jpg
Reps from Johnson & Johnson were recently on hand to promote the use of Johnson’s Baby Powder, which quickly and easily removes sand after a visit to the beach.

Many people know Johnson’s Baby Powder, but many might not know one of its best uses. On June 30th and July 1st, representatives from Johnson & Johnson were on hand on the beach exit ramps at Sampson Avenue and Webster Avenue in Seaside Heights to show a great use for this product that it a must in any beach bag. Reps showed beach-goers that if they sprinkle Johnson’s Baby Powder on their legs before they go to the beach, sand won’t stick. It always works the other way. A few sprinkles of the magic powder makes it far more simple to remove the pesky sand. Thanks for the tip Johnson & Johnson!

Christine Todd Whitman 4th of July visit…

July 6, 2007

picture-104.jpg
Seaside Heights Public Relations Directo Pete Smith and Chief Tommy Boyd are seen with former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman.

A surprise guest was seen on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights for the July 4th holiday. Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman was seen, escorted by SHPD Chief Thomas Boyd. Former Governor Whitman often visits the Borough, and always calls Chief Boyd when she gets to town. When she was in New Jersey’s highest office, Mrs. Whitman was no stranger to the Borough. She made several appearances as part of a bike ride that passed through Seaside Heights. She also would stop up for the amusements during governor times, as the Chief Executive’s summer retreat is in nearby Island Beach State Park.
