The courts and stands for the Association of Volleyball Professionals are seen under construction at Hiering Avenue and the Beach in Seaside Heights. The nationally televised Bud Light Open will be in Seaside Heights July 5-8, 2007.
For the second year in a row, the AVP, or Association of Volleyball Professionals, is holding the AVP Bud Light Seaside Heights Open as part of its national tour, sponsored by Crocs and a host of others, including Paul Mitchell, Barefoot Wine, Nature Valley, and others. This year, the AVP camp will be set-up at the location of Hiering Avenue and the beach, as opposed to the southern part of the beach that was used in 2006. The AVP is a massive undertaking, and the crews that assembled the stands and bleachers necessary showed up on June 26th to begin the set-up. Here are the dates and times for the Crocs AVP Bud Light Seaside Heights Open, and you can actually click on the link if you wish to buy tickets from the actual AVP website:

Many wedding ceremonies have taken place along the beach and boardwalk in Seaside Heights, and many times, Reverend Eleanor Caputo has officiated. But now that the New Jersey civil union law has gone into effective, these are being seen as well. The latest such event was the ceremony for Seaside Heights residents Barbara A. Mueller and Sherri Lautier, which happened on the afternoon of Saturday June 16, 2007. Reverend Eleanor met the couple on the boardwalk at Hiering Avenue, and friends and family surrounded the happy couple, who have been together for 14 years. (Anyone can go up to the boardwalk with their intended, a minister, and witnesses to have their ceremony like Barbara and Sherri, but anything more than that would require a special event permit and a certificate of insurance). Barbara and Sherri are not the first couple from Seaside Heights to be joined in a civil union, although they are the first believed to have had their ceremony here. Devon and Kelly Baker of Seaside Heights had their ceremony shortly after the law was enacted last February, but the ceremony was not in town. With such a high profile event, some are now wondering if Seaside Heights won’t soon be known as a “Vegas” for civil unions!

The F.O.O.L.S. are seen during their bagpipe parade along the boardwalk in Seaside Heights.
Last year Chicago, this year, Seaside Heights. The Fraternal Order of Leatherheads Society (F.O.O.L.S.), who are a national group of firefighters, had their 2007 convention at the Hershey Motel in Seaside Heights from Thursday June 21st until Sunday June 24th. Instrumental in bringing the F.O.O.L.S. to Seaside Heights was Bill Hopson, who is a deputy fire marshal for Ocean County and Seaside Heights boardwalk business owner. Greeting the F.O.O.L.S. was Chief James Samarelli of Station 44, The Seaside Heights Volunteer Fire Department, as the SHFD acted as host to the visiting brotherhood. The F.O.O.L.S. had quite a busy agenda. Thursday evening began with a pool party inside the compound of Hershey’s, followed by a visit to Spicy’s and the Beachcomber later. Friday began with a beach trip for most of the F.O.O.L.S. wives and families. At the same time, groups of F.O.O.L.S. competed in a Seaside Heights version of the Amazing Race, where they went on a scavenger hunt at local establishments. After Saturday’s convention activities, the F.O.O.L.S. members joined in for a bagpipe parade along the boardwalk that ran from Grant Avenue to the Franklin Avenue stage. Thousands looked on as the F.O.O.L.S. paraded down the promenade, and then stopped for a brief ceremony was had to remember fallen brothers, specifically the nine lost just a few days prior during a fire in Charleston, South Carolina, and those lost during 9/11.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL DISNEY MOVIES HAVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED ON THIS LINE-UP DUE TO CONTRACTUAL ISSUES!
Free Movies and Concerts on the Beach continue in 2007. This is the popular program I run, and it is also my favorite program to run.
This year, we have to begin later in July, due to the very weird “double” Fourth of July weekends that are happening due to the 4th being on Wednesday this year. Additionally, The Association of Volleyball Professionals will be here July 7th and 8th, and they will need time to set-up and take down, and they are at the same location we normally do concerts and movies. So due to these conflicts, Free Movies on the Beach won’t start until July 12th, and Free Concerts won’t start until July 16th.
FREE MOVIES ON THE BEACH SERIES:
Free movies on the beach in Seaside Heights will begin July 12th, and continue every Thursday and Sunday until August 30th. The concerts will be held at Hiering Avenue and the beach at dusk, which will be progressively earlier as the season goes on. Thursday nights will be children’s night, and Sunday will be over-13 night. All children must be accompanied by an adult and remain supervised. Movie-goers will be seated on the beach, so bring your own beach chair, beach blanket, snacks, etc. Glass or alcohol is not permitted, and smoking is not permitted while seated in the crowd.
Thursday, Children’s Night:
July 12th: Happy Feet
July 19th: A Christmas Story
July 26th: Charlotte’s Web
August 2nd: Nanny McPhee
August 9th: Madagascar
August 16th: Over The Hedge
August 23rd: Shrek
August 30th: The Wizard of Oz
Sunday, Over-13 night:
July 15th: Dirty Dancing
July 22nd: Sixteen Candles
July 29th: Fast Times at Ridgemont High
August 5th: Jaws
August 12th: Hairspray
August 19th: Dreamgirls
August 26th: Halloween
FREE CONCERTS ON THE BEACH SERIES:
Once again, the series will be held outside, on the beach at Hiering Avenue, 7 p.m. Monday nights beginning July 16th, and ending August 27th. In the event of inclement weather or conditions, the concert will switch to the location of the Beachcomber 2, which is located at Dupont Avenue and the Boardwalk, street side. As always, snacks and soft drinks from home are welcome, but glass or alcohol is never permitted on the beach. Bring your blanket or beach chair for the eclectic mix of music that is planned for what should be a great concert series:
July 16th: Our series has to start off special, and what could be more special than the music of Two For the Road, which features Seaside Heights native Frank “Cosie” Costa. Cosie wrote his original classic “Sounds of Summer”, which was in rotation on local radio every Memorial Day weekend for years, right here in Seaside Heights! Cosie now returns to where it all began for him, playing music on the beach of his hometown. This duo plays hits from the 70’s through today, and are always popular wherever they go.
7/23: Our concert series takes a decidedly different twist this night, with a visit by a quartet from the Garden State Philharmonic. This talented ensemble will be performing Patriotic numbers, mixed with music from various Hollywood movie soundtracks. A must! Check them out at www.gardenstatephilharmonic.com.
7/30: Go back to the 40’s 50’s and 60’s with the R.B. Express. This group truly exemplifies the tight harmonies and rythym of early street doo-wop. Check them out at www.rbexpressdoowop.com.
8/6: BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND, THIRD YEAR RUNNING Slippery When Wet sings Bon-Jovi cover. Check them out at www.jovitribute.com.
8/13: ALSO BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND, Amethyst sings Totally Awesome 80’s! Check them out at www.amethyst80s.com.
8/20: Join what has been coined “The Endless Bus Tour of New Jersey” with The Kootz. This talented and busy New Jersey group offers an eclectic mix of classic rock, pop and blues. Check them out at www.thekootz.com.
8/27: As special as it begins, our series ends again with the music of Two For The Road, featuring Seaside Heights native Frank “Cosie” Costa.

As part of my job here as the Director of Public Relations in the Borough of Seaside Heights, I have begun a series of “talky” blogs for this website. “Talky” blogs are very popular on other websites, and now Seaside Heights will have the latest in internet pop culture. For those unfamiliar with the term, “talky” blogs are regular blog (web log) topics that include a short video clip. Viewers can watch and then comment on the blog posts.
